Description
Additional Information

Product Name: American Mineralab Mohs Hardness Tester / Mohs Hardness Pick Set

Brand: American MINERALAB

Model: Grades 2-9 (Alloy Metal Mohs Hardness Test Tips)

Specification: HARDNESS PICKS (Multi-Hardness Level Set)

Dimensions: Approx. 70*43*190mm (L*W*H)

Total Weight: Approx. 0.5KG (Including wooden case, hardness picks, and auxiliary test accessories)

Test Range: Mohs scale 1-10. Note: (Mohs level 1 and level 10 are edge values and do not require testing; above level 9 is level 10, below level 2 is level 1, providing an approximate hardness result).

Instrument Function: Used for distinguishing Mohs hardness and performing scratch tests on various product material surfaces.

1. Advantages: Compared to traditional mineral-type Mohs hardness testers, its greatest advantage is that traditional mineral test tips can easily shatter if held improperly, used with incorrect force during testing, or dropped on the ground, rendering that hardness level pick unusable for further tests.

This imported American set features alloy test tips of different Mohs hardness levels, which are sturdy and durable. During testing or if dropped, the test tips will not shatter, ensuring a longer lifespan.

2. Commonly used for determining the Mohs hardness of surfaces such as floor tiles, construction materials, daily-use glass, optical glass, mobile phone glass, sanitary ceramics, art ceramics, marble products, minerals, gemstones, jade objects, industrial ceramics, etc.

3. Standard Parameters of the American Mineralab Mohs Hardness Tester:

1. Four double-ended Mohs hardness picks, graded according to Mohs hardness as follows:

Red mark: Levels 2 & 3, Yellow mark: Levels 4 & 5, Green mark: Levels 6 & 7, Blue mark: Levels 8 & 9.

2. Glass scratch plate: Mohs hardness level 5.5. Scratching the test object on this plate quickly distinguishes between hard and soft minerals.

3. Metal scratch plates: Mohs hardness values: Level 3.5 and Level 2.5.

4. Sanding stone strip: Used to sharpen the tips of the Mohs hardness picks after they become dull from prolonged use, maintaining sharpness for testing.

5. White scratch plate: Used for outdoor rocks and minerals to observe color stratification after scratching, aiding in analyzing sedimentary rock colors.

6. Black magnet: Used in rock and mineral exploration to quickly identify magnetic minerals, such as magnetite and pyrrhotite.

7. Document 1: Reference table of natural mineral hardness (in English).

8. Document 2: Complete instruction manual for this Mohs hardness tester set (in English).

9. Elegant wooden protective case: The wooden case consists of upper and lower parts. The pen caps can be removed and attached to the back of the case using golden screws to prevent loss.

Operation Method:

This Mohs hardness tester has a range of levels 1 to 10. The hardness of the test object is determined using the Mohs hardness picks with test tips from levels 2 to 9. The product undergoes a destructive scratch test with the hardness pick. If the surface hardness is below level 2, it is rated as Mohs level 1; if the surface hardness is above level 9 after scratching, it is rated as Mohs level 10.

The American Mineralab imported Mohs hardness picks include multiple test tips of different Mohs hardness levels. You can perform destructive scratch tests from low to high or high to low levels. After testing, wipe the scratched area with a lint-free cloth or alcohol cotton, and visually inspect or use a magnifier to check for indentations (destructive scratches) on the surface.

Hold the Mohs hardness pick with the same force and angle as normal writing. The Mohs hardness test is independent of force, angle, or direction; it depends on the natural structural hardness of the material. Hold the pick at about 70 degrees to the surface, press the graded tip, and make a scratch approximately 5-20mm long. For example, use the level 4-5 (yellow mark) Mohs hardness pick to perform a destructive scratch test. If no indentation appears with level 4, the product's hardness is above Mohs level 4. If an indentation appears with level 5, the product's hardness is at least Mohs level 4 but less than level 5.

For surfaces that are relatively smooth and dense, slow down the scratching speed and apply more force during the test. Smooth and dense surfaces have low friction coefficients, causing the test tip to slide easily and potentially fail to scratch the surface effectively.
